The Biological Mechanisms of Sound Therapy

1. Mechanotransduction (Vibroacoustics)
Mechanotransduction is the process by which cells convert mechanical stimuli into biochemical signals. In the context of Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT), low-frequency sound (typically 20Hz - 100Hz) is applied directly to the body via tactile transducers embedded in furniture or mats.
The 40Hz Standard
Research heavily indexes on 40Hz. At room temperature, a 40Hz acoustic wave has a wavelength of approximately 8.5 meters. When applied to human tissue, this creates standing waves that mechanically agitate cellular structures, promoting vasodilation and altering nociceptive (pain) signaling pathways.
Clinical Applications
- Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain: Mechanical stimulation disrupts pain signaling (Gate Control Theory) and promotes local circulation.
- Spasticity in Cerebral Palsy: Low-frequency vibration has been shown to temporarily reduce muscle spasticity.
2. Frequency-Following Response (EEG Entrainment)
Auditory entrainment relies on the brain's tendency to align its dominant EEG frequency with that of a rhythmic external stimulus. This is measured clinically using the Frequency-Following Response (FFR) in the brainstem.

Specific acoustic frequencies and physical vibrations can stimulate this branch, leading to increased vagal tone and parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activation.
